Abstract

Living with Conviction: Sentenced to Debt for Life in Washington State is a collaboration between formerly incarcerated individuals and their legal allies. We advocate at both the systemic and individual levels for an end to burdensome legal financial obligations (LFOs), using community-driven research, multimedia storytelling, and legal empowerment strategies. Our presentation focuses on our Legal Empowerment Program, helping unrepresented individuals request a reduction in their LFOs, to the extent the law allows. As part of this program, we advocate with clerks’ offices for a removal of procedural barriers to realizing the 2018 right to a waiver of nonrestitution interest, among other rights.
